Why I love the protofans community.

I was nervous at my first (and so far, only) protomen show.

I’d never had contact with another protofan before, and I was a little worried (okay, a lot worried) that people might be weirded out by my ridiculous love for the band.

little did I know.

I had brought along a friend for moral support, and because she had expressed interest in seeing them. We got there, and pretty much talked only to each other until the protomen were about to came on. I was lucky enough to get a spot at the front, right up against the stage. There was a girl behind me talking enthusiastically about all of her previous protomen experiences. I told her about how it was my first show, and her face lit up.
“Prepare for your face to be melted off.” She advised me. I found myself talking to other protofans, all bonding over our mutual love for what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest bands ever.

My friend was somewhat bored by “all this nerdiness,” but I was in heaven. Throughout the show, everybody fist pumped and went absolutely nuts, without fear of anybody judging them for rocking out, because hell, everybody was doing the same. Nobody was anything but incredibly friendly. I went to the restroom after the show and ended up spending 10 minutes talking to a punk girl about which we preferred, act 1 or act 2. (She liked act 1 better, I’m more of an act 2 kind of girl.) Later, when Turbo Lover came up and introduced himself (with a handshake, no less), I was pretty excited. My friend didn’t really understand my excitement, but there was a protomen fan nearby who was perfectly happy to be excited with me. The concert wasn’t just fun because I finally got to see one of my most favorite bands, it was also fun because I got to hang out with a wonderful group of people.

A friend of mine was recently at PAX east, dressed as protoman exe. She’s a pretty short girl, so when she’s at large concerts, it can be hard to see the band. When she went to the protomen concert, people were perfectly happy to give her a spot in the front so she was able to see them play. She noted that most of the people in the front were short, and that they didn’t have to push their way to the front as they often did. People were simply kind enough to allow them to have spots in the front.

The online protofans community is incredibly friendly as well. Arguments on the forums are rare. People post on the facebook page often, and there’s never a shortage of posts about the protomen on tumblr.

Another thing that I really love about the protofans community is that we respect the privacy of the protomen. There are many bands where, if they asked for the sort of privacy the protomen have requested, it wouldn’t be honored. The protomen have a pretty sizable amount of fans, but the people who disrespect their need for privacy are few and far between. A lot of protofans know the real names of many of the protomen, but they don’t make that information public. Non-makeup pictures are never posted on the protomen blogs or forums, and if somebody were to do that, they would probably end up being shamed by the community. The fact that protofans take the protomen’s request for privacy so seriously is something that actually makes me really proud of our community.

Some people might argue that other bands have similarly friendly fanbases, and that’s probably true, but I think that protomen fans are exceptionally friendly partially because of the kind of people we are. Most of us are megaman fans or gamers, and aren’t generally the kinds of people who were/are the most popular in school. I hate to use the word, but a lot of us are “nerds.” It’s exciting to find somebody who is as passionate about something as you, especially something that other people might consider uncool. It’s so nice to be around people who won’t look at you strangely for saying the phrase “megaman rock opera.” When I try to explain the protomen to people, they say that it sounds nerdy or silly when I mention the loosely based off a video game aspect. To find somebody that will not only not judge me for my “silly” obsession, but has the same passion as me, is exhilarating. Protofans aren’t exactly the majority, which makes it that much more special.

Anyways. I love you guys. Hugs and kisses for being some of the most awesome people on earth.

Love,
Deborah

I’m pretty jelly.

I love that they hopped the fence and went into the crowd. That’s definitely a thing the protomen would do.

Because they are the best band. X3

It was seriously unreal to see a bunch of girls see them standing there and have a screaming freakout. I may never cease to be amazed/pleased.

I’d imagine that they’re just not used to the whole ‘band hanging out with the fans’ thing. They’re all sorts of starstruck because they think of them as celebrities, whereas most of us (protofans) just think of them as really cool dudes. They might not be the type of people that go and see smaller bands like the protomen, so i guess they didn’t expect the protomen to do anything other then go backstage and stay there.
But that’s a great mental image, though. Chicks squeeing over the protomen. TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS CONCERT

/i need to stop being scary

LOLOL it’s not scary.

XD I’m bad at this though, so, like, ask me questions or something. What do you want to know about?

And yes, the girls absolutely beside themselves at the sight of them was the highlight of the whole show. It was just so cool.

I think I might be a little desensitized…like, I don’t quite see them as regular dudes—I mean, technically, but they’re pretty damn extraordinary too—I’ve seen them so many times that I’m spoiled I guess.

Saying howdy is part of the experience. It wouldn’t be a Protomen show without at least a little indulgence of ten shows’ worth of inside jokes and dragging whatever newbie I’ve adopted mid-show along with me for introductions.

But I want these guys to be stupidly successful, so seeing folks treat them as celebrities is pretty much the best thing.

They’re getting there. It’s so exciting. It’ll be a little sad when they’re super popular to the point where they can no longer hang out with fans after shows and stuff, but seeing them get so successful is such a trip. It makes me so happy to check the protomen facebook page and see that they’ve gotten 100 more likes since the previous week, and such.

so uhh questions questions questions.
1. how well-received were they?
2. any new stage antics that were particularly awesome?
3. was it weird seeing the protomen in broad daylight?

yeah pretty much. c:
